Lead Gardener / Assistant Garden Manager, Skagway, Alaska

Embark on an amazing horticultural adventure in Skagway, Alaska! Join us at Jewell Gardens, an incredible organic show and vegetable garden amidst the peaks and rivers of this great northern environment.  Jewell Gardens caters to the bustling summer cruise industry. We offer tours through our incredible gardens, which includes 2 glassblowing hotshops, a restaurant (serving our own veggies!), glass gallery and gift shop.  While our “open” season is May through September, the term of this position is March through November.

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, well organized organic gardener with landscaping experience who can help manage a team of up to six seasonal gardeners.  Journey with us from germination room to greenhouse to garden. This is truly an amazing opportunity!

The Assistant Garden Manager is a full time salaried seasonal position.  (Longer hours required Mid April through June)

Employment Term:  March through Mid-November. We are interested in someone who would give us at least a two year commitment.

Pay Rate:  Depending on Experience

Position Description, will assist in the following taska:

  • Start seeds early season and tend to growing plants
  • Keep detailed records and complete administrative duties
  • Place seed and plant orders
  • Start up greenhouse operations
  • Transplant seedlings to greenhouse and outdoors
  • Manage seasonal crew on three acres of cultivated grounds
  • Assist with current and new landscape projects, lawncare, beds, etc.
  • Help manage garden railroad bed (we have a dedicated train operator/maintenance person)
  • Report regularly to Manager.
  • Participate in garden planning/projects with Garden Manager.
  • Planting, weeding, harvesting throughout the season
  • Garden shutdown

 

Qualifications:

  • At least two years experience garden/landscape and a thorough knowledge of flowers and veggies
  • Working knowledge of organic gardening methods (fertilizing and pest management)
  • Intermediate to advanced plant knowledge of vegetables, flowers, herbs, berry bushes, trees and shrubs
  • Know how to start and use garden equipment: rototiller, lawnmower and weed-eater
  • Good management, organizational, and communication skills necessary ~ at times will be directing up to 6 people on single or multiple projects
  • Ability to type and use Microsoft Excel and Word Programs
  • Have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive a stick-shift vehicle
  • Be physically able to lift up to 80 lbs., move pots around, be on knees for much of a day, haul wheelbarrows full of compost and in general good physical health.
  • Be self-motivated and also be able to motivate crew members
  • Be able to plan, prioritize, and orchestrate projects dependant on garden needs, budget, weather, etc.
  • Artistic inclinations for landscape design would be an advantage.
